 Hi Everyone,
This is Cookie. She is the newest member of our family. She belongs to my son Matt and his fiance Barbra. She is a shih Tzu and Terrier Mix. She is polite, housebroken and has all her shots and is fixed so there will be no little surprises here.  Isn't she just adorable?

Oh boy I began a huge project yesterday after I updated my blog. I seen a site online that really interested me. Weddings and Traditions from the last 100 years. So I thought... Hmmm I think that this will make an interesting blog post. Well I only made it to 1964.
I started losing interest when most of it just became Celebrity weddings. But I do have some highlights for you that I will share. Probably not all of the 64 photos and tidbits of the first 64 years but it is a good start.

- The tradition of Bridesmaids. This is actually a tradition that started in Ancient Rome. The selected wedding party of the Bride all wore the same dress. This was done to protect the actual bride and used to deflect angry spirits and as a decoy to protect the bride also from those who may have wanted to hurt the Bride.
These women pictured here wore striped frocks and hats.
None of these photos are mine. I borrowed them and their history from the internet.

- The color white was not ordinarily used as the choice for a Wedding Gown. Queen Victoria in 1840 and by the early 20th century it became fashionable for Brides to wear white, especially for Society Weddings. Still it wasn't until after WW11 ended that it really became popular for all Brides.

- This marks the year that weddings became more formal. For Celebrity Brides or High Society Brides found themselves over whelmed at the prospect of invitations, caterers and all of the other details that take so much time, The Wedding Planner was born. Brides were free to enjoy other areas of their wedding planning without having to worry about the larger details.

- The Roaring 20's was ushered in with the Jazz era. A lot of Brides, even the Celebrity Brides began choosing smaller weddings. F. Scott Fitzgerald married Zelda Sayre at St. Patricks Cathederal in New York City with on 8 guests in attendance.

- Even tho Brides carried bouquets of flowers, the Bridal Bouquet became popular in the U.S. with ribbons and streamers. They were large and bulky for the most part but it became a tradition that lasted. Today's Bridal Bouquets usually are not as grand as they were in past years. Today the Bride may choose to carry a single rose or other flower or a small book or other memento to carry.

- A year for a Royal Wedding as Princess Mary Of England exchanged vows with Viscount Lascelles at West Minister Abby in February 1922. It was a formal and stately affair that was the talk of the town so to speak for many months as the workers prepared for this Royal Event.

- Hem lines became shorter. In the Photo above these 3 models are wearing the shorter hem lined wedding dresses with full veils. I think that they are charming and as you can see not all of them are in white but I am sure that they were of an off white type of gown.

- At what age was it appropriate for a young woman to marry? That was a question that stirred a huge debate. It was finally decided that the appropriate age was 21.2 years. Now I have no idea how they came up with this age but never the less it was decided to be the appropriate age.

- As weddings became more popular business's started opening up Bridal Departments. Everything geared to weddings large and small. They even began to carry wedding gowns. This was an interesting year for me as this was the year that my mother was born.

- Do you recognize the man in this photo. This is Alfred Hitchcock with his new Bride Alma Reville. It has been reported that Alfred was the first Groom to ever be showered at his wedding. I really love this photo. He looks so dapper with his suit and top hat.

- Although the Wedding Register was actually common in 1924, it didn't really take off until the year 1927 where displays were set up with the items that the the Bride and Groom had chosen for their new beginning as Husband and Wife. Items such as Chrystal, China and patterns among other things were displayed. A tradition that is continued today.

- Photography finally made it's debut when the first Automatic Film Developing machine was invented. It allowed for photos to become more popular with the wedding party, family and friends.

- A sad time for so many. The Jazz Era died. The Great Depression began. Brides began going back to much simpler times and opted for small and less expensive weddings. They did away with a lot of the earlier and more extravagant wedding traditions and Brides began wearing either their mother or grandmother's wedding gowns.

- Wedding Cakes were considered a Luxury that many could not afford as the price of sugar was steep in price. But for the fortunate few that could afford a luxurious wedding cake, this is an example of one taken in 1930. If you have ever wondered about the term Royal Icing, it came about because of the heavily frosted multi-tiered cakes. Most brides during this time did not have this style of a wedding cake.

- Las Vegas Nevada. No License, No Blood Test, No Waiting Period all meant No Problem. Many flocked to the State of Nevada for what was considered a Quick Wedding. The first Celebrities to take advantage of this was Rex Bell and Clara Bow.

- Quirky Weddings had always found a way but in 1932 it actually began a trend. Looking for ways to make their weddings unique, couples could be found exchanging vows in a lot of different situations.

- A Toast was Born as Prohibition ends. The rest is History in this new era. No more toasting the Bride and Groom with Punch.

- So Your Going To Be Married was the first wedding magazine to hit the news stands. It was so popular and was later re-named. Today you can still find this magazine under it's new name "Brides".

- I am sure that you can recognize this photo. This was the year that Bride Of Frankenstein hit theaters depicting what happens when a Bride chooses NOT to marry the Groom and the disaster of a forced Marriage.

- The Head Dress and Long veil become popular. I always thought that they were, but actually the long veils were simple and many were draped over the Bride. Head Dresses could be simple to the elegant. What ever the Bride chose.

- A Year Of Disbelief as King Edward VIII gave up the throne to Marry Wallace Simpson. She had already been wed and divorced twice. His reign was the shortest in British History which lasted only 326 days.

- Satin and Tulle was in Fashion. The average Wedding Gown consisted of approximately 48 yards of Satin and 22 yards of Tulle. This same style of Gown today would cost aprroximately $1,092.00 to make.

- The beginning of WWII. Weddings once again became modest and the planning was fast as most Brides and Grooms had to take into account of the Grooms who had only short leaves before being shipped out. The large weddings became gatherings of family and friends who attended the exchange of vows in their churches or other venues but many were held at family homes.

- Wedding Rings were not usually exchanged or common for the Groom. This custom started by American men who wore wedding rings to remind them of their wives, family and friends. Most men found comfort in wearing their rings during this time.

- Heiress Gloria Vanderbilt helped  spur this tradition of a Bride and Groom Wedding topper. Although shown here, the tradition really didn't take off until the 1950's.

- Obviously the appropriate age of 21.2 years did not apply to this bride. Norma Jean Baker was just 16 when she married her neighbor James Dougherty.

- The Dance. Can you guess what dance was the most popular in this era? If you guessed The Jitterbug then you would be correct.

- As the war raged on, the Bride and Grooms often chose to marry at City Hall. The Groom would often dress in his service uniform and the Bride would wear her best dress.

- The War was over. This sparked the era of The Baby Boomers! By this time everyone was ready to get on with being a family.

- The year that Quirky Weddings made a comeback. They are more popular today than ever. Brides and Grooms taking their vows in strange events, like jumping out of air planes, on boats or horses, even odder places.

- Often engagement rings were not actual rings at all. Even though a lot were rings, some were also tokens of individual relationships or family heirlooms to mark the occasion. It was actually a copy writer for DeBeers who coined the phrase "A Diamond is forever". This was the beginning of diamond engagement rings.

- Anther Celebrity Wedding for Singers Nat King Cole and Maria Ellington. They were married on Easter Sunday in Harlem New York.

- Necklines took the plunge while veils became shorter. The article didn't say if the hemline stayed long or short, but I suppose that it depended upon the Brides choice.

- The Hollywood Affair of the year was held at the Posh Bel-Air Country Club when Elizabeth Taylor married and had her reception there. Ironically Designer Helen Rose (Rodes)? designed not only Elizabeth Taylor's wedding gown but also the one for Grace Kelly.

- This marked more Hollywood moments as celebrities often chosen smaller weddings, Tiered Wedding cakes and Large floral displays.

- This happy couple celebrated 52 years of marriage. A long and happy union of Former President Reagen and Nancy Davis. The union ended upon his death in 2004.

- A year that belonged to Former President John F. Kennedy when he married Jackie Bouvier. Her wedding dress was designed with 50 yards of material. The veil that she wore belonged to her grandmother.

- Long before Reality T.V. CBS had a day time series who aired real live couples being married on the air.

- Christian Dior was a busy man in designing Wedding Gowns. For the filming of "The Ambassdor's Daughter, Olivia de Havilland wore one of his gowns.

- Grace Kelly married The Prince of Monaco. Her dress is on display today at the Philadelphia Museum Of Art. They made a striking couple.

- Lace and More Lace seemed to be the fashion in 1957 along with elaborate head coverings.

- Jayne Mansfield was considered a very lucky lady in which her intended proposed with a 10 carat diamond!

- Does anyone recognize this scene? The classic Sound of Music opened on Broadway featuring the famous classic Wedding  Scene.

- "At Last"  Song Writers Mack Gordon and Harry Warrens 1941 became the change for all wedding music when Etta James Recorded the beautiful "At Last".

- This Bride was very unhappy as she is supported by her parents who were not allowed to attend her Wedding Ceremony. The parents resided in East Berlin while her daughters wedding was in West Berlin. Her parents were denied entry.

- Harry Mancini won a Grammy for his "Moon River" which began to be popular for the Big Bands to play during the Wedding Processionals.

- This is the year that everything changed according to CBS's point of view. Martin Luther's "I Have a Dream."  speech, The Beatles were overtaking the music world and President John F Kennedy was assassinated. What didn't change was weddings. More and more people were getting married but they were opting for the Wedding Chapels along the Sunset Strip that had become popular.

- Elizabeth Taylor was the chosen Bride of the year when she married Richard Burton for the first time. She wore a lovely golden yellow dress for the event. She would go on to divorce Richard Burton but would remarry him again in 1975.

Whew I bet that your tired of reading all of this, can you imagine if I had made it thru 1965 to 2016?

Anyway I really hope that you enjoyed taking this trip down Memory Lane with me. Not that I knew all of this so it has been an educational journey for me.  And now I have to go and take care of some real life day to day issues. Take care.... BB
